This dramatic image captures Mount Nyiragongo erupting in fiery spectacle—streams of molten lava spitting into the sky above the eastern Congo’s Virunga Mountains. Located in Virunga National Park, near Goma, Nyiragongo is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, home to the largest permanent lava lake on Earth. Its volatile beauty and raw power make it one of Africa’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Inspiration Africa organizes expertly guided expeditions to this remarkable region, combining volcanic treks with wildlife experiences in one of the planet’s most biodiverse and adventurous destinations—the heart of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Travel to the Congo DRC

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is one of the least-visited destinations in Africa, offering travelers a chance to explore regions that lie far from the typical tourist trail. For those seeking a more authentic experience, the DRC invites exploration into a country where tourism remains minimal and local life unfolds largely untouched by global travel trends.

In the east, Virunga National Park stands out for its mountain gorilla treks and the challenging ascent of Mount Nyiragongo, home to one of the world’s few permanent lava lakes. These experiences, guided by conservation teams, offer insight into both the biodiversity and the efforts to protect it. Travel in this region, however, must be planned with care, as security conditions can change and local unrest is not uncommon.

The vast Congo River cuts through the heart of the country, connecting remote communities and offering rare access to the central basin. River journeys reveal life along the water and open up a way of seeing the country that cannot be experienced by road. In the south, the copper belt region around Lubumbashi provides a deeper understanding of the country’s economic landscape, shaped by mining and industry rather than tourism.

Kinshasa, the capital, reflects a different rhythm of life. It is a place of music, art, and urban energy, where visitors can experience the cultural pulse of the country. The city also serves as a point of entry for those looking to explore the western regions or cross into neighboring Brazzaville.

Travel in the DRC requires flexibility, caution, and reliable local partnerships. Infrastructure is limited, and political instability in some areas presents real challenges. However, for those willing to navigate its complexities, the DRC offers an unfiltered window into Central Africa, where travel is driven more by curiosity and engagement than by itinerary.

Must Visit in the Congo DRC

Far away from being a classic destination, the Congo DRC

offers an unfiltered glimpse into one of Africa’s most underexplored regions!

Virunga National Park

Africa’s oldest park, located in eastern Congo, is home to endangered mountain gorillas, active volcanoes, lush forests, and rich biodiversity. Guided treks offer close encounters with gorilla families in their natural element of the Virunga Mountains.

Mount Nyiragongo
An active stratovolcano with one of the world’s few persistent lava lakes, located within the Virunga National Park. The challenging trek to the summit rewards adventurous travelers with dramatic views and an unforgettable high-altitude overnight experience above the glowing crater.

Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary
Situated near Kinshasa, this peaceful forest sanctuary rehabilitates orphaned bonobos rescued from the illegal pet trade. Visitors can observe these great apes up close, learn about their behavior, and support important conservation initiatives in a natural setting.

Kinshasa
The capital city on the Congo River is a dynamic center of music, art, and urban life. Highlights include the vibrant markets, street art, live performances, and the National Museum, offering insight into the country’s complex history and cultural richness.

Congo River
Africa’s second-longest river flows through the heart of the DRC, shaping much of the country’s geography, culture, and transport. River journeys offer a slow, immersive way to access remote areas and witness everyday life along its banks.

Zongo Falls
A scenic waterfall located about 130 km from Kinshasa, Zongo Falls is surrounded by lush forest and dramatic cliffs. The falls are a popular weekend escape for locals and visitors, offering a refreshing, easily accessible natural setting just a few hours from the capital.

Best Time to visit the Congo DRC

The Congo DRC lies within one of Africa’s two regions of highest rainfall, receiving over 2,500 mm annually—meaning rain is possible at any time of year.

That said, the country experiences two main dry seasons: from June to September in the north and from May to October in the south, with shorter dry periods between December and February in some central areas. These drier months are generally preferred for travel, particularly for activities like gorilla trekking or hiking Mount Nyiragongo, when trails are less muddy and access is easier. However, the lush rainforests and dynamic river systems can be explored year-round, with rain adding to the experience rather than deterring it.

Bear in mind that each season has its own particularities, and that a non-advised season may well correspond perfectly to your specific needs.
