Uganda, located in East Africa, is known for its diverse landscapes, wildlife, and cultural experiences. The country offers a range of natural attractions, from its national parks to its lakes and mountain ranges, making it a destination with varied activities for travellers.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a key highlight, home to mountain gorillas that visitors can see on guided trekking experiences. The dense forests also support a variety of bird species and other wildlife, offering opportunities for nature enthusiasts and wildlife watchers.

Murchison Falls National Park is another major attraction, centered around the dramatic Murchison Falls on the Nile River. The park is home to a range of wildlife, including elephants, lions, and hippos, and offers boat safaris, game drives, and hiking opportunities.

Queen Elizabeth National Park, located in the western part of the country, is known for its diverse ecosystems, including savannah, lakes, and wetlands. It offers game drives where visitors can spot animals such as buffaloes, elephants, and lions. The park also features the Kazinga Channel, where boat trips allow for close-up wildlife viewing.

Kibale National Park is renowned for its chimpanzee tracking experiences. The park’s forested environment supports a large number of primates and offers visitors a chance to observe these animals in their natural habitat.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Famous for mountain gorilla trekking, this dense forest offers visitors a chance to experience close encounters with gorillas while exploring lush ecosystems filled with diverse wildlife and bird species.

Murchison Falls National Park

On the shore of Lake Albert, in northwest Uganda, the park is centred around the dramatic Murchison Falls on the Nile River. This park offers game drives, boat safaris, and opportunities to see elephants, lions, hippos, and other wildlife in a stunning landscape.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

It is the most popular savanna park in Uganda and the best place to see lions including the Tree Climbing lions. It prides in a great diversity of habitats that include: lakes, savannah grasslands, forests and wetlands that serve as home to the biggest variety of large mammals in the country.

Kibale National Park

Located in the west of the country, it is home to one of the largest populations of chimpanzees in Uganda. This forested park offers chimpanzee tracking experiences and the chance to see numerous primate species in their natural habitat.

Rwenzori Mountains

Also known as the "Mountains of the Moon," these mountains located on the border with the DRC offer scenic hikes through alpine vegetation, glaciers, and snow-capped peaks, attracting trekkers and climbers looking for adventure in a unique environment.

Lake Victoria, Jinja and Ssese Islands

Africa's largest lake and the world's largest tropical lake, Lake Victoria offers activities such as fishing, boat trips, and visits to the Ssese Islands. The town of Jinja, located on its shores, is known as the source of the Nile and a hub for water sports.

Kidepo Valley National Park

Located in a remote area of northeastern Uganda, Kidepo is known for it's rugged savannah, dominated by Mount Morungole and transected by two rivers. It has a large wildlife populations, including lions, elephants, and buffaloes, offering uncrowded game drives.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

This sanctuary is dedicated to the conservation of Uganda’s rhino population and home of the only white rhinos in Uganda. Visitors can track rhinos on foot and learn about ongoing efforts to protect and reintroduce these endangered animals into the wild.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Located in the Virunga Mountains on the southwestern border, this park is one of the few national parks in the world harbouring mountain gorillas. It also offers golden monkey tracking, along with hiking opportunities through the dramatic volcanic landscape.

Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon is the 2nd highest mountain in Uganda and the largest intact caldera in the world. The park is home to over 300 species of birds, including the endangered Lammergeyerand. It is also known for its hiking trails through waterfalls, caves, and lush vegetation.

Entebbe

Situated on the shores of Lake Victoria, Entebbe offers botanical gardens, beaches, and the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, a sanctuary for rescued animals. It is also the location of Uganda’s international airport, serving as the gateway to the country.

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo is the closest of all Uganda's national parks to the capital city. It is known for open savannahs, acacia woodlands, as well as for it's diverse wildlife such as zebras, hippos, and birds, offering game drives, boat safaris, and guided nature walks.

Pian Upe Game Reserve

Uganda’s second-largest protected area, this conservation area in the Karamoja subregion features vast savannahs, rugged landscapes, and diverse wildlife, including cheetahs, zebras, and unique bird species. A remote destination for adventurous safaris and cultural encounters.

Best Time to visit Uganda

Uganda experiences two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season, each offering unique travel opportunities. The best time to visit is during the dry seasons, from December to February and June to August. These months are ideal for gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, and wildlife viewing, as animals are easier to spot around water sources, and trails are less muddy.

The wet seasons, from March to May and September to November, bring more rainfall, resulting in lush green landscapes and vibrant birdlife. Though some activities may be more challenging, such as trekking, this is the best time for birdwatching, as migratory birds arrive. The parks are also less crowded, and the scenery is at its most vibrant.

While Uganda is a year-round destination, your visit will depend on whether you prefer drier conditions for trekking or the green season for birdwatching and fewer tourists.

Bear in mind that each season has its own particularities, and that a non-advised season may well correspond perfectly to your specific needs.
